MOIWA SKI RESORT

Overview

Moiwa is the hidden gem of Niseko, Japan’s famous skiing paradise. As Moiwa is situated slightly apart from Niseko’s four main resorts (Niseko United), it has the advantage of being quieter than the neighbouring slopes. This means you can enjoy the bountiful top-quality snow the area is famous for without the queues that usually come with it – ideal conditions for beginners perfecting their snow plow and those looking for fresh tracks in deep powder!

Moiwa is well known throughout Niseko as a ski resort with historical roots dating back as far as 1919. There weren’t any ski lifts at the time, and skiers would climb the mountain for hours because of the exceptional snow quality, abundant snowfall, and wide piste.

With just eight trails and three lifts, Moiwa is a small but sweet ski resort. There are two green trails suitable for beginners, three intermediate red runs, and three ungroomed black routes for advanced skiers and snowboarders. The longest course is the 2,000-meter red Sky Slope, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding scenery as you descend the mountain.

Although the trails are meticulously groomed, the main attraction of Moiwa is the snow and all those fresh tracks available off-piste. The in-bounds area of Moiwa provides lots of great lines through widely spaced trees. The patrollers are completely cool with riders heading off-piste, so you can pretty much go for it.

From the top of the quad chair head to skiers’ left and hit the steep glades near the Sky Slope and the Shirakaba Slope. The sidecountry out to the skiers’ right of the ski resort seems infinite. There are awesome secret powder stashes, but if we told you where they were they wouldn’t be a secret!

Facilities

Moiwa’s facilities are proportionate to its size, with a day lodge that houses all of the ski resort facilities and services. The lodge has large changing rooms and a rental shop with ski and snowboard equipment and clothing available for hire. Upstairs is a 200-seat restaurant where you can find Japanese and international cuisine such as ramen, udon noodles, hamburgers and fried chicken.

Accommodation

There is actually quite a variety of styles of accommodation near the Moiwa ski area, considering the number of options are limited. If you are looking for a relaxing stay, we recommend the Konbu Onsen area which is very close to the Moiwa lifts. Hotel Kanronomori is a beautiful boutique ryokan (Japanese inn) in this hot springs area. As to be expected, the hotel has fantastic onsens on-site.

To ski at Moiwa you can also stay in one of the Niseko villages (Niseko Village, Hanazono, or the mega Niseko Hirafu) and ski in to Moiwa. Stay in Hirafu accommodation if you want to get the free shuttle bus to Moiwa.

Dining & Night Life

While there are some hotels and restaurants around the base of Moiwa, the area is fairly quiet in the evenings. For more lively après-ski options check out Hirafu town, which is about a 10-minute drive away at the foot of Niseko’s largest resort, Grand Hirafu. Hirafu is very tourist-friendly, with numerous eateries and a bustling nightlife.

Alternatively, after hitting the slopes head to one of the nearby onsens for an evening of ultimate relaxation!

Getting There

As Moiwa is just down the street from the main Niseko area, you can check out our blog post detailing the various transport options to help you decide how to get to Niseko. If you are staying in Hirafu, there is a free daily shuttle to Moiwa that operates from Dec 14th through March 26th.
